Information for Schools

Gloucestershire Arts for Schools aims to bring professional arts experiences to children, young people and adults to enhance their learning in a pleasurable and meaningful way. We link visual, applied and performing artists to schools and other educational organizations, such as museums, libraries and youth groups by providing talks and workshops.

With over 30 years’ experience teaching primary school, Fran Webber, founder of GLAS, understands the pressures teachers are often under. She also understands the need to bring back the life to the curriculum, often lost in the mainly academic delivery demanded by the division of the subjects in the National Curriculum. Our vision is to bring quality experiences, delivered through kinesthetic channels, to redress the balance.

'I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.'

Workshops can be subject specific or cross-curricular giving a broader spectrum. For too long the emphasis has been on a segmented academic curriculum but the wind of change is blowing. There is a move to recognize the value of cross curricular learning and particularly of the importance the arts has to play in the delivery of this flowing curriculum. We believe every child should be given the experience of learning through creative channels, just as every child has the experience of learning through academic routes.

Teachers are encouraged to take part in the workshops to enhance their own skills and build confidence in delivering similar activities to the children and young people in the future.

In addition, we aim to provide life long learning outside the school environment by providing workshops for youth groups, through libraries and museums and by linking with organizations providing specialist workshops for children and adults. Gloucestershire Arts for Schools has over 80 artists, most with long experience in their field, providing a ready resource to support this new move. We aim to provide professional delivery and aim for excellence.

We cater for all ages, from Under Fives, through Infant and Juniors, Secondary to 16+. Workshops can be for half a day, whole day, several days or on a longer term residency basis. Some artists will work in after school workshops, if required. Enquiries for one or more artists are usually settled initially in one phone call, with the detail being sorted later.

‘I can’t believe this. I’ve been phoning round all afternoon and
getting nowhere. I’ve sorted it all out in one call to you.’
