Artist Statement

I have been interested in straw craft since 1975, when my parents first grew long straw varieties on their farm to make corn dollies. They taught me the basic skills for plaiting, and since then I have attended various workshops organised by the Guild of Strawcraftsmen, to learn other aspects of straw work.

In 2006, I achieved the Craftsman’s Award of the Guild of Strawcraftsmen, and exhibited this work, along with some of my other pieces, at the Crafts for Christmas event at the NEC.

When my parents retired from farming I took over the growing of the traditional long straw to supply straw workers all over the UK. At the same time I introduced workshops for beginners, some of which I take at home, others I travel to.

Most of my work is based on the traditional plaits, and the tied work, using natural straw, but I also enjoy working with coloured rye straws to produce marquetry cards and pictures.

I am always interested in learning new techniques and enjoy being able to pass these skills on to others.
