Storytelling
& Literacy Workshops
Unlike
television and cinema, live unscripted storytelling doesn't spoon
feed imagery to children. Rather, it encourages children to listen,
think and react to what they have experienced.
My
workshops aim to encourage children to nurture and develop these
reactions so that they are able to communicate more creatively and
effectively. This creates fertile ground for the development of
both language skills and creative writing.
Each workshop is individually tailored to your schools needs and
can focus upon:
•
Defining & developing story building skills.
• Literacy & language skills
• Artistic work with general literacy development.
• Drama/ hotseating
I have
many stories that cover topics on the National Curriculum (Greek
and Roman myths etc ) and each workshop satisfies the first four
learning objective 'strands' of the Primary Framework for Literacy,
so a workshop can neatly tie in with your childrens needs.
Typically,
a session will last 1-1.25hrs, giving four sessions in one day.
Most schools choose to place different year groups together ie)
Reception & yr1, yr2 & yr3, yr4 & yr5, yr6
This usually allows the whole school to experience a workshop in
one day.
Alternately, you can book a 2 or 3 day workshop 'block'. This obviously
gives a greater opportunity to expand ideas and 'ground' the work.
Storytelling
I am also available for day or half day storytelling sessions, delivering
curriculum based stories from around the world that warm the heart
and fire the imagination!
Storytelling
in Museums and Libraries
I am available to 'bring alive' your exhibition with specifically
tailored tales to enhance the experience of your visitors. I am
also available for library visits, again tailored to your needs.
Artist
Statement
I
am a 39 yr old storyteller, originally from the West Midlands. Having
trained for 4 years at Bournville and Bournemouth as a Fine Art
Photographer I then moved into the field of Reed Bed Sewage Treatment
before deciding in 2005 to pursue Storytelling as a career.
I am
driven by a need to inspire children to discover the power and creative
potential of their imagination through storytelling.
I believe that stories are the fundamental 'nutritional' requirement
for developing imaginative and creative individuals. Unfortunately,
the nature of the modern world is such that children are being starved
of this nutrition.
The
inspirational way in which I work aims to redress this. I have a
very interactive approach to storytelling, which makes a performance/
workshop both engaging and inclusive to all. Children are not 'told'
a story, they are brought 'into' a story. This makes the post- story
activities that I provide so much richer, as the children are working
with material that they feel that they own.
With
all of the pressures and constraints placed upon them these days,
teaching staff need all of the help they can get. I bring storytelling
into the classroom as an inspirational teaching aid, supplementing
and bringing colour to your schools curriculum .I am an independent
educator who can give both teachers and children an inspirational
and informative day!
