Workshops Offered

Felt-making, batik, printmaking, paper making, and (abstract) painting

Prior to creating either the batik, or felt, design and drawing work is actively encouraged. These craft workshops are excellent for children discovering new skills in colour and design considerations. Curriculum topics can easily be linked into the craft activity, with past workshops successfully including themes from nature, history, and geography.

I encourage children to explore abstract painting in terms of a sensory experience. The children are encouraged to express themselves through colour and texture. These workshops can open up ideas of creativity, and by widening their use of language, can bring a deeper understanding of art. I will often make reference to other artist’s work to act as be a stimuli.

I can work equally well with large groups, or individuals.

Artist Statement

I commenced my training at Dartington College of Arts, Totnes as a community artist, and whilst there worked on several projects including murals, street theatre, childrens’ summer schemes, dance pieces, and fire sculptures. I then completed a fine art painting degree in Sheffield. In Sheffield I helped to set up First Circle Arts Space, and ran The Forum Gallery, where local artists exhibited. I continued to paint and had several exhibitions around the city.

I continue to concentrate on my own painting. My painting is abstract and experimental, and it is concerned with colour and texture. It has always been inspired by the process of making, and is concerned with exploring notions of space and linking ideas with personal expression. I’m very passionately committed to Art and its role in society.

Since having children I have completed a Teaching Assistant course, and I have worked in different schools supporting children of differing abilities. I have always found myself incorporating Art into the pupil’s work schedule, always trying to kick start their imagination and enthusiasm for the subject.

I enjoy the opportunity to work on projects within schools. I see Art as intrinsic to learning, whether young or old. My interest in batik and felt-making started whilst working in schools as an Arts Specialist. I find that they provide a combined experience of vibrancy and immediacy, which is a great combination for children!
