Artist
Statement
The
Global Bee Project
The
Global Bee Project is an organisation that unites Scientists and
Artists to raise awareness within communities about the importance
of bees and their vital role as the pollinators at the base of the
food chain. The Project shows how people of all ages can make a
difference to the future survival of bees, that actually pollinate
one third of all the food we eat. There are more than 250 species
of bee in the UK alone, not just the honeybee, over 90% are non-aggressive,
safe and will not sting.
Jessie
Jowers
Since
an early age Jessie assisted her family in growing plants, keeping
bees and observing nature, in doing so she received an education
that added immensely to her formal studies. The knowledge she obtained
has been a source of inspiration and happiness that has infused
her life. The value of experiencing and learning from the natural
world is something that she wants to share with others.
Jessie studied BA Fine Art Sculpture at Central Saint Martins, London.
Through her practice she combined scientific studies of the natural
world, with her artistic expression. She gathered scientific data
and translated it into a visual language. Since graduating Jessie’s
love of making and aquiring skills expanded as she went on to work
for fashion designers, training as a traditional leatherworker.
For the last eight years Jessie has worked as a Production Designer
and Art Director for the BBC. Jessie believes that there is so much
to learn by really looking and observing the fascinating plants
and creatures with whom we share this world.
Carlo
Montesanti
Carlo
grew up in Siracusa, Italy. He spent a lot of time out of the city
with his grandfather who kept honeybees on his lemon farm, it is
from here that Carlo’s passion for bees and entemology emerged.
Carlo trained to be a Master in the Italian Merchant Navy, learning
a wide range of technical, meteorological and scientific skills,
but Carlo’s passion for dance, performance and the natural
world led him to change his career and, together with Jessie, set
up The Global Bee Project. Carlo is a well known breakdancer in
Italy and he has danced professionally in many competitions around
Europe. He has taught dance to young people, since he was fourteen
years old and he is currently teaching dance to both children and
adults in the UK.
