American
Traditional: incoporates four traditional American Songs with clapping
games, simple circle dance and extracts from Laura Ingalls Little
House series, or The Oregon Trail or other representative stories.
Easy
rounds and canons: these need no instrumental parts creating as
they do a beautiful tapestry of interwoven harmony from a single
melody line. They may be enjoyed for their simplicity, admired for
their complexity and loved for their perfect unity. Canons and rounds
are drawn from a wide variety of vocal traditions. Short stories
(myths, legends etc.) are chosen to match the theme of the songs.
Taize
chants: Draws on simple repetitive choruses from the International
Christian Community in Taize, interspersed with inclusive stories
which encourage spiritual development.
Artist
Statement
I
have worked as a journalist/writer and a musician/teacher for many
years. My experience of teaching children in groups and leading
whole school assemblies has shown me how much they can benefit from
singing and story combined. Singing is the fundamental way of making
music and story is an expression of the shape we all seek to give
to our life experience. The two combined provide a powerful force
for fostering tolerance and understanding between children and a
tool for understanding their own lives.
I believe
in simplicity of presentation. Very few resources are required.
Simply a desire to sing and listen. Occasionally it may be appropriate
to add a creative activity.
The
workshops may be used to underpin learning objectives for KS1 and
2 Music but have a wider inter-curricular application as well. Bespoke
workshops geared to the requirements of a particular school are
available on request.
