Artist Statement

I am a textile artist producing decorated clothing, wall-hangings and three-dimensional forms incorporating natural materials. I am a member of Bath Textile Artists and exhibit with them two or three times a year.

Techniques that I use include hand – dyeing, simple printing or painting on the cloth, also hand and machine embroidery. The garments, which I produce to commission and for exhibitions, are one-off special occasion pieces which reflect the individuality of the wearer. Texture and colour are important aspects of my work ; the processes used to decorate fabric with thread, print or dye are perpetually fascinating.

Current themes include combining drawing on cloth with stitch, using vintage linens to work on, and the incorporation of natural materials such as willow and vine branches.

As well as being a practicing artist, the handing on of skills, inspiration and knowledge is extremely rewarding. I am available to work as a visiting Artist in Schools and have extensive experience of long and short projects in the Primary, Secondary and adult sectors. I can offer projects, using techniques such as fabric printing, painting and dyeing as well as all forms of stitching, which will provide experience with colour, texture, structure and form relevant to all ages. Two recent projects, where I was the lead artist, involved using recycled clothing to create original costumes which were worn in a performance fashion show. Pupils and adults benefited from a sense of achievement and an experience which they will remember.
