Artist Statement

My two passions come together in providing workshops – my love of art and my love of sharing it with others. At the age of 8 I decided I wanted to do ‘something’ in art, choosing at 11 to attend a technical school where I could study art, rather than attend a grammar school. At various stages I wanted to be an architect, illustrator and fashion designer, but finding my forte for communication decided to go to Teacher training College, where I attained a distinction in Bookbinding and Calligraphy as my main subject.

After over 25 years’ teaching experience I had the chance to return to University. There I achieved a First Class Honours degree in Textiles for Fashion and have been a practicing artist since, designing and making modern machine knitted garments. I am inspired by almost anything in the natural world – bark, fungi, seashells, the sea, rocks – the list is endless. I just love the colours, textures and patterns and have found man can only imitate nature. Even the most ornate architecture was pre-empted by stalagtites and stalagmites in caves in the mountains in eastern Spain.

Now the educator and the artist fuse together in being able to share my wide experience with others through talks and workshops.
