Artist Statement

I am a full-time community artist and have been involved in children’s entertainment and education for about thirty years - so lots of experience in all sorts of situations! I have worked with literally thousands of children all over the country - at folk festivals, in schools, libraries, craft centres, village halls and community venues

Much of my inspiration is drawn from our wonderful and diverse heritage of traditional dance, music, song, customs and folk drama - and I use this as a basis for passing on my knowledge to children and getting them to develop their own skills. Once they have some basic ‘building blocks’ I get them to write their own dances, compose their own songs and, if appropriate, work together to devise their own show/performance, which we often give to parents. On most school projects they also get involved in designing and making costume and props.

I was nominated for the West Midlands Folk Federation's Outstanding Achievement Award 2004

In June 2007 I was presented with one of only 75 awards made nationally by the English Folk Dance and Song Society on their 75th anniversary. The awards recognise people who have made a particularly significant contribution in the field of folk tradition. My award was for "enthusing others to participate in traditional music, song and dance" and as an "outstanding teacher and performer".

I am a member of Equity and the Musicians Union and have the necessary enhanced CRB certification and Public Liability insurance.
