All ages

Workshops Offered

Small group of no more than 10 children. Early years. Take them out of doors on a walk. Let them take notes of things that they see that interest them, sounds they hear, plants they see, animals etc. Also collect any objects, sticks, feathers etc. Then go back indoors and using large sheets of wallpaper lining paper, make drawings that represent their experiences. Some of the objects can also become part of the drawings or made into separate sculptures. Let the children lead, explore and experiment.

Small group of infants, 10 max. Collage, using different materials collected from scrap store/ natural environment, or from school if available. Let the children arrange the materials onto clear sticky back plastic sheets, once they are happy with the arrangements another clear sheet is stuck on top and these can then be hung in a window or any where with light coming through to make a stain glass window. Groups of no more than 10.

Exploring clay with a group of primary, under 5s or infants, 10 max, adjusting the level of involvement with the clay to suit the age group.

With a group of older children, make use of the idea of “HOME” what this means to them and what colours, shapes, sounds etc are conjoured up by this word. Then take these ideas into sculptural form using withies, clay, and found objects….

Movement workshop with primary school age, can be combined with drawing/painting or just movement alone.

Artist Statement

I have been working with children for many years in contexts ranging from adventure playgrounds to schools, to private art groups run at home…. I have studied the diploma, “ art and play in therapeutic work with children” at Roehampton Institute which led to my working with the group” the Place To Be”. This is a London based organization, which provides therapeutic creative activities for children in deprived schools. I worked alongside a movement therapist for two years.

During my MA in “Arts in Society” at the University of Gloucestershire, I ran several arts projects in the area with both children and adults.

I am now working for 5x5x5, a group that brings artists and educators together working with early years. Within the 5x5x5 context I have worked with a small group of early years children in two schools, St Saviours Church of England primary school in Bath and Malmesbury Church of England Primary School. With both these groups we worked out of doors, following the interests of the children as they played with and explored the natural materials and environments.

I work fluidly with children, listening to their interests and taking their lead rather than working towards a fixed, pre ordained agenda. I only work with small groups of 10 max.
