Artist
Statement
Storytelling
is a dynamic and exciting art form, and within the magic of the
story circle many things are at work reaching deep into the hearts
and minds of those present. Weaving together tales from around the
world I create vibrant and engaging story performances and workshops.
My approach is very gentle and open-hearted - encouraging those
present to enter fully into the world of the imagination and its
endless possibilities. Story reaches right across the curriculum
and through the fascinating space between ‘the tale, the teller
and the told’ lies the opportunity to tap into and explore
the treasure trove of creativity that each and every person has
inside them. I have a colourful repertoire of ways to explore and
encourage creative expression and I integrate movement, music, visualisation,
voice work, drama and role play into my work. To enhance story-making
and recording I offer book-making, weaving and sewing projects,
and the making of story objects or props.
I have
a lot of experience in mainstream settings and have also worked
in art galleries, theatres, folk festivals and open spaces. Most
of my work takes place in nurseries and primary schools across the
West of England. I am inspired by the children I meet and delight
in the pleasure we gain from sharing stories. I am passionate about
reaching “unstoried” children and have seen the tremendous
benefits of creating a story circle and a storytelling community
within schools.
Before
I became a professional storyteller I was a teacher for over twelve
years and am very interested in creative learning and teaching.
I aim to work in full partnership with educators and would like
to collaborate with artists from other fields.
