Artist Statement

Bridget has a degree in Fine art and discovered clay whilst studying Art Therapy in 1980.She developed her skills in ceramics through evening classes and working in a potters collective in London.

In 1989 she moved to Gloucestershire to undertake a residency at Prema Arts Centre. Since then she has completed a number of residencies and taught in a variety of settings with all age groups and all levels of ability. She currently works from her studio at home near Stroud and teaches adults with learning difficulties.

Bridget’s work is made using mainly red earthenware clay..Her one-off burnished forms are loosely based upon structures observed in nature and have both hand built and thrown elements. They are burnished (polished with a smooth object such as the back of a metal spoon) before firing. Some then undergo a sawdust firing in which they absorb patterns created by smoke.,
Besides these sculptural pieces, Bridget makes domestic ware on the wheel: large platters, bowls, mugs, teapots etc., the surface acting as a canvas to which she applies coloured slips under a transparent glaze.
