Welcome
to Gloucestershire Arts for Schools
Welcome
to GLAS, a special service to bring professional visual, applied
and performing artists together with schools by providing workshops
and talks for groups of children, young people, or adults. We also
provide inset workshops to support teachers in their delivery of
the National Curriculum through the arts. In addition, we organize
arts experiences for educational centres including libraries, museums
and youth groups. We cater for a wide spectrum of artistic experiences
to enhance your projects and will source artists to fit your needs.

AFRICA
COMES TO PAINSWICK SUMMER SCHOOL
We
spent three fabulous days at the Croft School in August with
48 children from the Painswick Cluster listening to stories
and turning one of them into a play, accompanied by music
made on African instruments, dressed in masks and costumes
made by the children, against scenery also made by the children.
It all culminated in a performance for the parents which was
very well received.
The
children had great fun, made new friends and learned about
African animals, stories and music. We all worked out socks
off with a packed programme and were thrilled with the results.

A
few comments from the children’s parents:
'These
three days really enriched my daughter’s summer. A
great mix of relaxed creativity and good organization'
'This
is the only activity I am aware of through the summer holidays.
I thought it was brilliant and wish there were more'
'Flo
really enjoyed this. It was a chance to do something different
and do a ‘show’ at the end. More of these workshops
during the holidays would be great!'
'Charlotte
enjoyed all three days. She came back beaming and full of
the activities she’d done. She especially enjoyed
the drumming and demonstrated some as well as the elephant
actions. She was pleased other children from her school
were there but not worried is she’d been the only
one from her school. Many thanks for such a great workshop'

BUSY,
BUSY
It’s been a long time since I lasted
posted news but I’m back!
It’s been a very busy time, getting
out to schools to meet Heads and Curriculum leaders all over
the county. Then I’ve also been out meeting new artists
and strengthening partnerships. I often feel so lucky, as
I meet so many fantastic people.
We now have over 80 artists in the group.
More and more schools are using our services with excellent
feedback – check out the Testimonials section to support
this.
As well as workshops within the school day,
we have provided after school support and will be providing
artists for two summer projects linked to the Extended Schools
initiative.
We have provided three artists to work with
Brewery Arts on their Orchard Project and regularly provide
artists to support Out of the Hat – the new Tewkesbury
Heritage Centre – to run Heritage linked crafts workshops.
By the end of the summer break we will have
had as much work in this term as in the whole of last year,
with bookings already coming in for the autumn term.
We have held more Artists’ Gatherings
and the group is really gelling together, both socially and
on a mutual support basis. I plan to hold another Gathering
in July before the end of the academic year – more news
of that soon.
I think we can safely say we are now firmly
established and I am very much looking forward to the future.

| NEW
LEAFLET |
 |
 |
The
new leaflet has now been sent out to all primary and secondary
schools in Gloucestershire. Already we have had good feedback
on the format and I’m sure there will be a good
response over the coming weeks. As well as responding
to arts weeks and special occasions, we are really looking
to make our service become part of the curriculum in support
of the Government’s directive for a more free-flowing
curriculum. Arts activities are a brilliant way of linking
subjects. |
EXPANDING
OUR SERVICE
In
our formative months we have concentrated on working with
schools. Now we are in negotiations to expand our service
out to libraries, museums, heritage centres and other organizations
where we feel we can make a difference. We are also building
links with partner groups so we can support each other in
expanding arts education throughout the county. So watch this
space!
MORE
THAN A LINKING SERVICE
At
the end of July we had planned to celebrate our first term
with a Gathering of artists. Sadly this had to be cancelled
due to the floods – yes even Stroud had its flood –
not as widespread as elsewhere but just as devastating for
those affected. Well, that celebration will take place –
on this coming Thursday – providing an opportunity for
artists to network and to help gel the group together. There
will be more opportunities for the artists to meet once or
twice each term. As we become more established I would like
to introduce opportunities for representatives from the schools
to take part and really get the ideas buzzing.

GOING
FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
Although
in our infancy as a group I am delighted to report that in
the last two months we have bookings from across the county
– schools in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, several in Gloucester,
Stroud, Tetbury and near Stow and Cirencester have all shown
faith in our group. And they have not been disappointed. We
have received much praise and gratitude for the excellence
of service we provide.
We
are working with Infant, Junior and Secondary schools, providing
one, two and three day workshops as well as several arts weeks
and a couple of after school clubs. Already we have started
negotiations for the autumn term, with several of the schools
inviting us back, and looking forward to working with schools
new to us.
More
artists are joining the group, and I’m particularly
glad to welcome some from the Forest. So often the river seems
to divide our county but I’m looking forward to building
bridges and working closely with artists and schools throughout
the whole county. If you are a school or an artist interested
in working with us please contact Fran Webber to talk about
your needs.
